UWMC Internship Program
In spring of 2008, UWMC will once again offer a program to place students with
area businesses, non-profit organizations, and governmental agencies. The
Internship Program responds to increased interest in the formation of
partnerships between business and educational institutions, as reflected the
Marathon County Partners in Education in collaboration with the Wausau/Marathon
County Chamber of Commerce.
The Internship Program is not an effort to provide students with employment.
Rather, it is designed to use a focused work experience to learn more about the
culture of work, about key issues facing employers and employees, and about
one’s own career interests and goals. Opportunities will be provided to talk
about the experience—on the job and at UWMC—to learn from it. While students
will undoubtedly be the primary beneficiaries of this program, employers should
benefit through work performed and through the possible identification of future
employees. Many of these students will move on to complete their baccalaureate
degrees at other institutions, but with encouragement from area employers, we
hope that many will return to Wausau and Marathon County as they launch their
careers.
Hours and job responsibilities will vary from one position to another. The
program will allow UWMC students to gain valuable work experience, to explore
career possibilities, and to learn about key issues related to employers and
employees.
Parallel Class: LEC 200 (University Forum)
This one-credit course is required of participants, and will be taught by UWMC
Faculty.
Intern Requirements:
-- Successful completion of 40 to 50 hours of on-site work under the
direction of the sponsor between February 1st and May 21st, 2008. The sponsor,
in consultation with the student, will determine the schedule.
-- Completion of the one-credit parallel class with a grade of C or higher.
Assessments:
Sponsors will be asked to assess intern performance and to share this
information with the intern and with UWMC (a form will be provided). Sponsors
will also be asked, at the completion of the project, to assess the
effectiveness of the Internship Program (form provided). Interns will receive a
grade for the 1-credit class, with that grade determined through success with
class requirements. Interns will also be asked to assess the effectiveness of
the Internship Program.
