Career
Exploration Resources
The following resources are available to UWMC students free of charge. Please see an advisor for information on how to obtain these resources.
What can I do with this Major? A resource to explore how various majors relate to different careers. For each major that interests you, choose either the PDF or HTML version to find an outline of common career areas, typical employers, and strategies designed to maximize career opportunities.
Strong Interest Inventory - This inventory is done on-line and results
are automatically sent to your personal or school email address. It takes
roughly 40 minutes to complete. The Strong provides an in-depth assessment of a
person’s interests among a broad range of occupations using John Holland’s
occupational themes. Also available are basic interest scales, occupational
scales, and personal style scales. If you would like to take this inventory
please send a request to Annette Hackbarth-Onson.
Myers Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI) - This inventory takes roughly 30
minutes to complete. Completed inventory forms can be scored by appointment
only. Results are useful not only to career exploration but to understanding
yourself and other people. This inventory is based on Carl Jung’s theory of
psychology type. Results are divided into 16 different personality types with
career suggestions added for each individual type. Completed score sheets and
booklets should be brought to Annette Hackbarth-Onson in Student Services for
scoring and discussion. An inventory similar to the MBTI is
available online.
Self-Directed Search - This inventory is also based on John Holland’s
theory of occupational themes. This inventory is entirely self-scoring and uses
two separate item booklets. Results are then used to search occupational
interests based on a 3-letter code. Students who complete this inventory are
encouraged to explore all options that each code offers. Item codes are as
follows: Realistic (building repairing, working outdoors) Investigative
(researching analyzing, inquiring) Artistic (creating or enjoying art, drama,
music, writing) Social (helping, instructing, care giving) Enterprising
(selling. managing, persuading) Conventional (accounting, organizing, processing
data).
Wisconsin Careers - This is a web based career research tool that is
available for all UWMC students from any computer. Login instructions (including
the UWMC student registration code) are
available in Student Services. Careers may be researched using interest
inventories (Strong & Self Directed Search). Additionally there are other
occupational assessments within this web resource relating to work values,
workplace skills, transferable skills and interests. Students can explore
in-depth information on various occupations and can also research majors and
programs. This website is a valuable research tool for all UWMC students.
