Course Description:

 

This course studies marriage and family as social institutions in a changing world. We shall examine the historical changes and societal variations in family patterns, and changes over the life cycle. We shall also explore the sources and consequences of a variety of family forms.

 

Textbook:  Cherlin, Andrew J. 2002. Public and Private Families: An Introduction. Belmont, Boston: McGraw Hill Higher Education.

The Americans with Disabilities Act is a federal anti-discrimination statute that provides comprehensive civil rights protection for persons with disabilities. Among other things, this legislation requires that all students with disabilities be guaranteed a learning environment that provides for reasonable accommodations of their disabilities. Grading (altogether: 200 points)

 

 

10 Quizzes (pop quizzes): 50 points

Most will be multiple-choice questions, 5 each time. Some will be small take home assignment.

 

 

25% of the final grade

Note: 2 points will be deducted from your quiz if you leave class after the quiz.

 

 

2 Exams: 120 Points

60 points in each exam (50 point multiple choice questions and 10 point short answer questions).

The exams will cover both the textbook and CLASS LECTURES.

 

 

 

 

60% of the final grade

 

 

One 5-8 page Essay: 30 points

Due on the last class before final exam.

 

 

15% of the final grade

 

Make-up Exam and Quiz Policies

 

Makeup exams or quizzes will be given only for documented excused absences. The student must make up the exam or quiz WITHIN ONE WEEK from the last date of the excused absence. You have to take the makeup exam or quiz during my office hours. Otherwise, a grade of zero will be assigned.
