UW-BC Bridge Program for English Language Learners

UW-Barron will offer a bridge program to provide new English language learners with an orientation, student engagement activities, and continued support during their first college semester.  The program will bring together instructors, students, counselors, and tutors and will help the campus explore and develop new ways to recruit, support, and teach a growing multilingual student population.

The UW-Colleges Office of Student Accessibility Services will test the effectiveness of Key to Access technology for reading and transcribing print materials as a potential learning tool for UWC students with disabilities.

UWEC Mental Health Awareness Campaign

UW-Eau Claire will train campus gatekeepers to recognize the signs, symptoms, and risk factors of mental health issues and instruct them on how to connect students to appropriate campus resources.

School of Education Diversity Organization

Funding will provide resources for a new Diversity Organization in the School of Education at UW-Lacrosse that will offer mentoring for pre-education students.  The program will be open to all students but will specifically focus on those who are low-income, first generation, multilingual, and students of color.

Revising English Placement at UW-Manitowoc

UW-Manitowoc will implement a pilot program that will revise the way that the campus places students into first-year writing courses.  The project team will track students’ academic success and use the findings of the project to assess the need for learning resources courses on the campus.

Dave Dettman, UW-Marathon

Building the Library Collection in the Area of At-Risk Higher Education

The grant recipient will create an annotated bibliography and develop a collection of print, electronic, and audiovisual resources for UW-Colleges faculty and staff who work with at-risk students.  Professionals at other UW-System institutions will also be able to use the new materials through interlibrary loan.

Understanding and Strategically Planning How to Better Reach At-Risk Milwaukee Debate League Students

Funding will provide resources for faculty training that will support outreach and bridge programs between UW-Milwaukee and the Milwaukee Debate League, which is part of a national program for disadvantaged high school students.

Exploring Expertise in the UW System

A team of UW professionals will visit UW Whitewater and UWSP to learn more about programs for multicultural students, students with disabilities, students on probation, and students needing tutoring. UWO personnel will write summaries of their learning as a result of these visits and an implementation plan for program transformation.

Faculty College on Universal Instructional Design

The project team will organize a small-group workshop for UW-System instructors, focusing on how to apply the principles of Universal Instructional Design to syllabus design and classroom strategies. An additional large-group presentation on pedagogies incorporating Universal Instructional Design will be offered for UW-System faculty and staff. Tentative workshop date: Friday, October 2, 2009. Tentative speaker: Dr. Jeanne Higbee of the General College at the University of Minnesota.

StrengthsQuest and Suspended TRIO Students

The UW-Parkside TRIO program will implement a pilot project to evaluate the effectiveness of using the StrengthsQuest assessment and curriculum for students on probation who were suspended and then readmitted after an appeal.

UW-Superior will offer a training program that will certify tutors through the College Reading & Learning Association (CRLA).

Aspergers 101 for Professionals in Education

The project team will create two online videos with PowerPoint presentations to teach faculty and staff about Asperger’s and high-functioning autism in the college-aged student.  UW-System professionals will be able to access the presentations through the UW-Whitewater Diversity Learning wiki.
