Ideas for Surviving the Freshman Year
* Go to class! The
worst thing you can do is miss a class.
* Learn the campus and the opportunities that
exist for you.
* Be considerate. Selfishness has no place at
college.
* If you commute to college, don’t just stop in
for classes. Stay on campus and get involved.
* Set a goal for your grade point average (GPA).
* Budget time for yourself – study time, class
time, rest and recreation.
* Accept constructive criticism.
* Realize that being a full time student is a
full time job.
* Communication skills are critical – both
written and verbal. Express yourself intelligently
* Know the names of all your professors and
where their offices are located.
* Visit with your academic advisor at least once
per semester.
* Develop a sense of belonging, get involved,
and make friends.
* Be patient with yourself.
* Make your own decisions.
* You are in school for your own education – not
someone else’s.
* Know where you can receive academic
assistance. (Academic support center, TRIO, Wausau Homes Writing Center)
* Sleep is very important. Staying up too late
can take its toll on morning classes.
* Learn and follow university rules and
procedures. Learn how to use your campus email and check it at least once per
week.
* Be prepared for some homesickness. It goes
away eventually.
* Keep lines of communication open. Talk with
parents, friends, advisors and teachers.
* Know your academic situation before the
withdrawal period.
* Treat other people with respect.
* Accept responsibility for yourself and your
behavior.
* Fully understand that you have a tremendous
amount of freedom – do not abuse it!
* Learn to communicate in the classroom.
