Atmospheric
Circulation and Local Weather
This exercise runs
Nov. 10 to 17. You are required to hand in the required materials
in class on Nov. 18.
Objective:
The objective of this
simple exercise in local weather is to relate or explain local changes
in wind direction and strength to changes in national pressure patterns
as depicted on national isobar maps. These local wind conditions
will be compared or contrasted with those of Bismarck ND.
This exercise is limited
to wind strength and direction ONLY. Links will contain other data that
should be ignored at present.
Procedure (what
you must do!):
-
Obtain
a blank map with this link.
-
Use the links below to
locate local wind direction and strength data for both Mosinee/Wausau
and Bismarck. Make note of this information on the map in graphic form
and in written form along the lower margin of the map. (A key to interpreting
wind direction and strength is available HERE.)
There is no need to print off copies of the maps you find in the links,
neither here nor in any other step.
-
Use the links to locate
a national map of isobars. Sketch these on your map in an appropriately
general fashion.
-
Beneath the map make a
"prediction", based on the isobar patterns and your knowledge of mid latitude
circulation, as to what the wind direction will be the next day in both
locations. You will not be graded on the accuracy of the prediction!
-
On the next map (the next
day), repeat steps 2-4 and note how accurate was your "forecast" from the
previous day. Describe briefly "what went wrong", if anything. Now
continue to repeat all the steps through the end of the week.
