UPPER AIR

  1. You can view two animations of upper air circulation over North America:
  2. In class you will be given the latest radiosonde raw data from which to construct your own 500mb constant pressure surface for North America and calculate wind speeds in selected areas. If you want further practice, you can order up this data from HERE. Once there, deselect "common variables", select "geopotential height", and then "submit" your request. The "answers" can then be had by going back and selecting "common variables" OR by going to the link below for the latest 500mb constant pressure surface for North America.
  3. You are also asked to create an animated GIF of the upper air flow for a number of days. The animation to which you will want to add is located HERE.
  4. Other than that, you might be interested in the following sites:

SURFACE PRESSURE AND WINDS

You can get current data on surface winds either from instruments in the lab, or you can go to either of the following sites (the NWS sites give pressure change): In addition to this material, there is a lab exercise on this -- these materials can be accessed HERE.
