Data from air bubbles in the Vostok
(Antarctica) Ice Core provide us with a long-term perspective on the
rise in carbon dioxide levels in the past 150 years. Note how the recent
rise takes us far beyond anything recorded in the recent geologic past.
Data from the Mauna
Loa Observatory in Hawaii provide us with direct measurement of carbon
dioxide concentrations from the past 40 years.

Beware below, contrarian views are slightly over-represented, but they
have to be read and confronted. Also, if you investigate some of the contrarian
sites listed below you can gain an indication of the intensity of recent
lobbying by U.S. business groups against an international global warming/greenhouse
emissions treaty.
There are a number of industry and conservative groups that are organized
against emissions limits:
The Global Climate Information
Project. Probably the premier source for contrarian science and
strong economic and social arguments against committing to a policy of
reduced "greenhouse gasses". Funded by a diverse group of manufacturers,
unions and citizen's organizations.
The World Climate Report. A publication
claiming to represent diverse group of western and national interests.
Richard Lindzen
(A challenging article from a high-profile scientist on the contrarian
side of the issue -- but note that the CATO Institute which puts this out
is one of those liberal-economic/neo-libertarian "think-tanks".)
There are a number of liberal-economic and neo-libertarian "think-tanks"
that oppose the science and economics of global warming:
The
Heritage Institute (Right-wing think-tank; much more sophisticated
effort than a year ago).
A number of generally contrarian link sites are available:
Still Waiting for the Greenhouse.
A iconoclastic site coming out of Australia. Has some of the best links
(including majority scientific links).
The Global Warming Information
Page. (I can't figure out who exactly is responsible for this one,
but that's often part of the fun of these kinds of sites!).
