This animation shows the withering away of the Antarctic ozone layer, from mid-August 1997 to mid-November 1997. The vertical scale is altitude (km), and the horizontal scale is partial pressure of ozone (milliPascals). The blue line shows the distribution of ozone throughout the depth of the Antarctic atmosphere on August 7, and the red line shows the changing level through November 18. Also given at the top of the image is the total ozone volume in the column on each day, as measured in Dobson Units (DU). The profile begins to show some recovery in late October, but is still about 100 DU short of its "pre-hole" total in mid-November. (The ozone returns at a higher altitude due to heating and expansion of the atmosphere as summer progresses.)
