Opportunities

There are a number of different options for learning
another language in the Wausau area. The list below includes community
classes and camps for children and adults, as well as college credit
courses offered through UWMC and the UW System. NTC also offers
“Workplace Spanish.”
For Children:
UWMC Continuing Education Study Buddies
These are 6 week classes for children in grades K-5 and their parents!
The classes are offered at elementary schools in the Wausau and D.C.
Everest School Districts.

UWMC College for Kids and Language Immersion Camps
These are half-day camps for children completing grades 1 & 2, full-day
camps for kids completing grades 3,4 and 5. These classes are a fun way
for kids to be fully immersed in a language! Previous camps included
Spanish, French, German and Chinese.

There is a website that has beginning lessons for children in French,
German and Spanish. This website was designed by a number of local
teachers and members of the Alliance of World Languages through a grant
from the Wausau School Foundation.

For Adults:
UWMC Continuing Education courses offer community members the
chance to get a variety of languages through evening courses.

UW Marathon County offers a variety of
for-credit courses in Spanish, French, German and Chinese ( new for Fall
2006 ). Some courses are face to face an others are taught via

Northcentral Technical College offers a variety of Spanish
courses specific to certain workplaces (healthcare, EMS, production,

Resources for Language Learning
There are a variety of programs available for self-study for
children and adults. Pimmsleur and the Rosetta Stone are two programs
that get high marks from people we talk to.
The local bookstores and the library are sources for self-study
programs. Adults around the world are seeking out immersion
experiences and the internet provides a window into the countless
opportunities available in various countries. In choosing a school, it
is best to get a recommendation from someone who has participated in the
program.
Concordia Language Villages offer summer camps and weekend experiences
for both children and adults. The website is

“Champs-Elysees” has audio magazines for intermediate to advanced
speakers of French, Spanish, Italian and German. The website is

Tutors
Contact Kristy Sterken if you are interested in private tutoring in
either French or German. Kristy is a certified and experienced language
teacher and she will provide you with information about her rates.
