Art Awards
Appel International Travel/Study Award*
What is this award?
Each year a number of students are selected to travel to a foreign
country to study and explore its art, architecture and culture. The length
of time is aproximately 10 days at the end of the Spring semester.
Who is eligible?
Any student working toward a degree, in any major, who has taken
at least one studio art course in which they have shown fine ability and
demonstrated a desire to improve through intensive work is eligible.
How is selection made?
At the end of each Fall semester the art faculty puts together
a slate of candidates (usually 16) and presents these names, along with
some of the work, to the Scholarship and Awards Committee for the final
selection (usually 8 students are selected but it has been up to 10).
How much is the award?
The value of this award is approximately $3,000, depending on
the country to be visited. The Scholarship and Awards Committee provides
transportation, housing and a stipend for food and miscellanies.

Appel Artist Award*
What is this award?
This is considered the highest honor given by the art department. This award provides for a major funded exhibition of the student's
work to be held 3 or 4 years after leaving UWMC. Along with the exhibition, a substantial catalogue is published
covering the work.
Who is eligible?
Generally, a leaving Sophomore Art major who intends to complete
their education at a 4 year institution is the most likely candidate.
How is selection made?
Based on a student's complete art performance during their term
of study at UWMC, the art faculty selects an individual. An alternate is
also selected in case the award winner is unable to present exhibition quality
work. Occasionaly, the decision is postponed and a former student is selected for the exhibit award.
How much is the award?
The recipient receives an exhibit and exhibition catalogue, usually running around $10,000 to publish. If selected as a current student, $600 cash is also awarded.

Art Majors Award*
What is this award?
This award selects a number of art students to travel to New York and experience the heart of contemporary art,
through visiting world-class museums and galleries.
The length of time is approximately 4 days during Spring break.
Who is eligible?
Students must have a declared art or art-related major.
with at least 6 credits in art to be considered. Students who have already completed a BA or BFA degree in an art-related field are not eligible.
How is selection made?
At the end of the Fall semester students are selected on the basis of their G.P.A. in art courses.
How much is the award?
The value of this award is approximately $800. The award provides transportation and housing.
Appel Scholarship*
What is this award?
This is a partial tuition scholarship.
Who is eligible?
Usually entering Freshman who intend to major in Art, and who
have submitted a collection of their work for review. Continuing students may also be eligible.
How is selection made?
After the art faculty has examined the student's work a recommendation
is made to the Scholarship and Awards Committee. Portfolio Review is in the Spring by appointment or by viewing an exhibition of the students work. Phone: (715) 261-6203 or 261-6300
How much is the award?
The scholarship is a partial tuition scholarship redeemable for a 3 credit studio art course within two years of receiving the award.
* The Appel scholarship and awards are made possible through a bequest
from Fred Appel in the name of his wife, Anita, who was an art student at
UWMC in the 1960s. There are several important programs funded by the Appel bequest which help provide the UWMC art department with an edge of excellence. Among the awards currently available through the Appel fund are the International Study/Travel, Appel Artist, Art Majors, and the Appel Scholarship.
Departmental Distinction Award
What is this award?
The recipient of this award has had a strong influence, through
their work and method of working, on other students in the department, and
has also contributed to the spirit and vigor of the department.
Who is eligible?
Both Freshman and Sophomores are eligible, but it is usually
given to a Sophomore.
How is selection made?
Near the end of the Spring semester, the art faculty agrees
on the candidate.
How much is the award?
This is an award of recognition, with a gratuity of $100.
The Wisconsin Valley Art Association Art Award
What is this award?
This award is given by the Wisconsin Valley Art Association for an outstanding art student continuing at UWMC. The student must also qualify for finacial aid.
Who is eligible?
Continuing students are eligible.
How is selection made?
During the year, the art faculty examines student work with
this award in mind. A decision is made by the art faculty shortly before
the end of the Spring semester.
How much is the award?
This award is $1000.
Festival of the Arts Award
What is this award?
This award is given by the Wausau Festival of the Arts for the
"best" art student of the year.
Who is eligible?
This award is given to either a Freshmen or a Sophomore.
How is selection made?
After examining classroom work, student exhibitions and qualities
important for success, the art faculty nominates a recipient to the Scholarship
and Awards Committee.
How much is the award?
The Wausau Festival of the Arts provides a check for $500 and
invites participation in a group exhibition where additional awards may
be received.
Additional Awards
The Carlton Hill award is a tuition scholarship
for those who graduate from Wausau East or D. C. Everest High Schools and
who are planning to major in Art, Creative Writing or Journalism. Incoming
Freshman are chosen by the UWMC Scholarship and Awards Committee based on
recommendations and High School academic record. This scholarship is renewable
based on recommendations and the academic record from the Freshman year
at UWMC. The scholarship ranges up to $1,000 a year.
The John S. Newberry Award is an award
for creativity in any field of learning and is open to all students of UWMC
who are full time and are in good academic standing. Application to the
Newberry Award Committee every spring is needed to be considered. This award
is $500.
